An Old Skyscraper, unlike our President, Promotes Uniting Us
"And one must wonder how grand it would be if a president, like an old skyscraper, inspired hope for a better world through uniting us as opposed to dividing us"--Poetry by Ernie McCray
At a time when the president of the country has dedicated himself to steering us away from coming together as a people to embrace our rich diversity and seek ways to make our society one that’s more fair-minded and more inclusive, I look from my hotel window in Sacramento at the words: “UNITING A NATION,” the only part of the inscription in my view, at the base of the Elks Tower, a tall structure near the California State Capitol Building. I’m in town with my dear Maria, a San Diego Community College District trustee who is there attending The Community College League of California’s annual Legislative Conference to make the case to state legislators on why community colleges matter, how their transformational work with students, in “investing in equity,” positively impacts local communities, the state, and indeed, the globe. And one must wonder how grand it would be if a president, like an old skyscraper, inspired hope for a better world through uniting us as opposed to dividing us, as such a deed, it seems, should be a reality, rather than an optimistic dream - which means We the People have to stand firmly against this man’s non-life-affirming schemes.
Ernie McCray is an activist for love and peace who acts and sings and writes both poetry and prose, a man who rises each day to do whatever he can, no matter how small or grand, to make the world better in some way.
Unapologetically.
