In politically troubled times recently, it seems as though tradition dictates that the Republican Speaker of the House of Representatives must go to Mar a Lago on bended knee in hopes the former president of the United States will bestow a blessing upon him.
That’s what former speaker Kevin McCarthy did just three weeks after the January 6 insurrection at the Capital, after making the horrible mistake in judgment of assuming that breaking the law was a bad thing.
In "Oath and Honor" the book by former Wyoming GOP Rep. Liz Cheney, revealed that she was told cCarthy's visit to Mar-a-Lago was prompted by concern over former President Donald Trump being "depressed."
The media was told the two men met to unify the party and discuss plans to take over the House in the 2022 elections. Many of the GOP congressmen who denounced the uprising walked back their criticism; others have now reached the point where they are leaving the hill.
Current speaker Mike Johnson made the pilgrimage this week, hoping to save his job in the face of congress actually passing a couple of bills. The congresswoman from Georgia, now being referred to as Moscow Marge, is threatening to force a vote to remove the speaker, and the hard core nihilist faction of the party is unable to come up with a suitable replacement.
“Election integrity” was the curtain behind which Johnson begged for support. And sure enough the two of them held a press conference to announce legislation requiring proof of citizenship for voting.
The occasion was a two-fold victory for the presumptive Republican nominee, since he was able to gin up fear about immigrants and be seen as the supreme power in his party.
It should go without saying that legislation aimed at solving a non-existent problem won’t go anywhere. Voter fraud isn’t a thing, especially involving noncitizens. The tiny number of incidents has no impact on an election. And when it has happened, Republicans are, more often than not, the culprits
The right-leaning Heritage Foundation’s database of confirmed fraud cases lists less than 100 examples of non-citizens voting between 2002 and 2022, amid more than one billion lawfully cast ballots. And the left-leaning Brennan Center for Justice analyzed more than 23 million votes from the 2016 election and found an estimated 30 examples.
Reality hasn’t stopped the MAGA noise machine from claiming Democrats are soft on immigration so they can sign up non-citizens by the millions. It’s all part of the Globalist (code for Jews) conspiracy, as local Awaken Church pastor Jurgen Matthesius has preached.
Here’s Speaker Mike Johnson at the Mar a Lago press conference, “Right now, the administration is encouraging illegals to go to their local welfare office to sign up for benefits. Well, guess what, when you go to a local welfare office they also ask you if you would like to register to vote.”
Via NBCNews:
It is already a crime to register or vote as a noncitizen in all state and federal elections, though Washington, D.C., and a handful of municipalities in California, Maryland and Vermont allow noncitizen voting in local elections.
And few individuals break those laws.
“This is a crime where not only are the consequences really high and the payoff really low — you’re not getting millions of dollars, it’s not robbing a bank, you get to cast one ballot,” said Sean Morales-Doyle, a lawyer at the Brennan Center for Justice. “But what also makes this somewhat unique is that committing this crime actually entails the creation of a government record of your crime.”
Registering to vote and casting a ballot both leaves a paper trail that elected officials are required by law to routinely review. Some records are available to the public, as well.
“It’s very easy to catch, and you will get caught,” Morales-Doyle added.
So, when former President Trump, Speaker Johnson, and others call for states to do things we are already doing or ban things that are already banned, they aren’t actually trying to support election integrity. They are promoting election malfeasance. Why? Because they want to scare you. They want to diminish your confidence in valid election results so that they can try to block those valid election results if they don’t like them.
Meanwhile, back in Washington DC, House Republicans were introducing a bevy of bills aimed at keeping Joe Biden’s dirty hands off your home appliances.
